Season 7 Inter Cup Platinum Cup Quarter-finals: Two second half goals see Cheetahs squeeze past Tectonic Mango

Insmouth hit the road once again after the Platinum Cup Quarter-finals draw pit us against Tectonic Mango (21), the reigning champions of the England Premiership. Our symbolic hosts were lead from day 1 by manager andyoz and earned immediate promotion by winning the Championship back in Season 1 to never look back. They quickly followed this success by getting the Inter Cup Iron Shield trophy in Season 2 to instill a winning culture. After a few quiet seasons Tectonic Mango established them as a local powerhouse and won the Premiership back in Season 5 and built on that last campaign by successfully defending the title and doing the double by also winning the England Cup for the first time in their history.

Insmouth Gazette pundits were surprisingly unanimous in predicting a win for Cheetahs, with 8 of them expecting a full time victory and just 1 thinking it would go into penalties.

Neutral venue for this match was 14,700 seater The Souq, home of Manama AFC (14). The functional capacity of the ground was 12,400 and there were 10,533 fans who attended to watch the game.

Tectonic Mango employed the 4-5-1 formation. They had some injury woes with first choice keeper Eric Wayne (70) sidelined with an injury and replaced by Dylan Dudfield (51) in goal. Key players were the two CBs Terrence Sherwood (66) and Giacomo Sainati (63), right winger Thomas Verrall (69), AMs Bryan Gould (61) and Chioh Adewale (63), DM Des Long (66) and veteran striker Steve Cutler (60).

Insmouth maintained the usual 4-5-1 formation. LB Michael Leitz (52) once again got the nod to start and Bernardo Azzolina (54) stepped down to the bench to be replaced by Shane Pybus (71). Striker Takafumi Daiwa (57) lost his place in midfield to DM Ellhard Gos (51).

Tectonic Mango's injury issues gave Insmouth a serious advantage in goal. Cheetahs also boasted a slightly better defense and attack while the two sides were evenly matched in midfield.

Cheetahs started the match brightly and our direct passing was causing some issues at the back for the hosts. Leo Furtado forced CB Terrence Sherwood to bodycheck him with a decent turn on the edge of the box and earned a free kick - and a very early booking for his marker.

7' - Yellow Card! RCB Terrence Sherwood (Tectonic Mango)

Furtado took the free kick himself but his curled shot went wide.

It was a rare chance for Furtado as he was expertly man marked and felt isolated from our offensive play for long periods in the first half. Insmouth still converted their superior quality in shots but most of those came from midfield players and were either inaccurate or didn't pose too much of a threat for Tectonic Mango keeper Dudfield.

The match wasn't a one-sided affair though. The hosts had enough of the ball to cause our back four problems and managed to connect with their forward Steve Cutler more efficiently than we did. It resulted in a couple good opportunities, including a one-on-one with Insmouth keeper Rosewarns - however the goalie won that duel with a brilliant close-range save to deny Tectonic Mango from converting the best chance of the first half.

The other opportunity was prevented by Shane Pybus at the expense of a tactical foul and a booking. The resulting free kick shot went straight in the wall and was quickly hacked away.

35' - Yellow Card! LCB Shane Pybus (Insmouth Cheetahs)

The first half ended without any goals and the match was still wide open for either side to take it. Insmouth had the better all-round play but Tectonic Mango created the best chance so far and probably had regrets for not taking the lead.

Cheetahs built on their performance after the break, adding more accuracy and tightening up the defensive vulnerabilities. Tectonic Mango weren't able to get in our final third as easy as they did before and Cutler was the forward looking isolated up front now, while Furtado was getting more balls at the other end.

And yet again it was the hosts who looked more threatening on the break. Their LM for the game Andrew Keating (55) took advantage of a poor pass in his own half to advance quickly while Insmouth had committed too many bodies forward. It lead to a 3 on 3 situation that was looking very dangerous until Cheetahs RB Bettino Vetrano (67) outmuscled Keating and prevented him from passing the ball. The referee blew the whistle for a foul and Vetrano objected which lead to a yellow card - but that was still a small price to pay for stopping the counter.

62' - Yellow Card! LB Bettino Vetrano (Insmouth Cheetahs)

Insmouth right winger Lutu Francescoli had a quiet game returning from injury the previous day but he was looking much better in this one. Regaining some match fitness worked miracles for the explosive Uruguayan and he was doint some great things down the right hand side.

It was little surprise his great understanding with Leo Furtado ticked once again to finally get Insmouth the opener we were looking for. Francescoli whipped in one of his trademark crosses that found Leo exploiting the little space between Tectonic Mango's CB pair. Furtado headed the ball past Dudfield and rushed to congratulate his good friend for yet another vital assist!

67' - GOAL!!! 0-1 CF Leo Furtado (RM Lutu Francescoli assist)

The goal brought relief on the visitors bench and soon enough Michael Leitz was brought off from the LB position to give him some rest and youth hole player Ottah Okoro came on.

72' - Substitution (Insmouth Cheetahs): LB Michael Leitz (52) off; hole player Ottah Okoro (36) on

It was a bold substitution at a stage of the match our opposition was expected to go forward and press us for an equalizer but it turned out a good decision as Insmouth never lost control until the end.

Tectonic Mango did increase intensity in their play but it also lead to urgency and a lot of rushed passes that proved easy prey for our defense. Insmouth were comfortable with taking the game to their own half and playing on the counter for the remaining minutes. We even looked more dangerous than the hosts in the closing stages.

There were three minutes of added time and the home team couldn't create anything significant in our box. The game ended with a fast counter attack when Francescoli advanced with acres of space and curled a fantastic low pass for Furtado. The Insmouth striker picked it up with a good first touch and entered the box before unleashing a powerful shot in the corner of the net to finish off the game with style!

93' - GOAL!!! 0-2 CF Leo Furtado (RM Lutu Francescoli assist)

This also turned out the last event in the match and Insmouth advanced to the Semi-finals stage of the competition.

Final score: Tectonic Mango (21) - Insmouth Cheetahs (3) 0-2 (Leo Furtado 67, 93)
Man of the Match: Leo Furtado (Insmouth Cheetahs)
