Promote or not.....
I have, following a long holiday, found that I'm now top of the league. Ten points above fourth with four games to go.
I'm not ready for promotion, but I'm wondering if going up would be a disaster. Even if I were to throw the next four games, there's no guarantee I won't go up. I had planned another season or two in the second tier.....

All great fun...!
Today if I win, I'm crowned Champions of the Championship League, with 3 games left. I've almost maintained a straight climb up to the Premiership, with most Champion wins for the duration of my tenure here.
However, like you... I'm not sure I'm ready. So... dilemma..
Sit in the lower leagues doing what exactly.... or try and fail and discover what I maybe missing? Maybe I won't fail.... what is a fail?
I'm thinking, I have improved thew Club, I have increased capacity of the stadium and enjoy a better balance. Playing many lower rated teams however, make my income 'just enough' and not a great revenue as yet. So, surely playing better rated teams will mean my gate income improves?
Maybe my results won't be as good and yes, I'll struggle to get the improved CR up, or slower anyway - but I have to try.
So, give it a go... learn something..

The eternal dilemma of IAG...
I too thought that I wasn't ready for the top tier, especially since Brazil's Serie A is a real powerhouse with a lot of very good clubs. When I got promoted for the first time, I spent around 6 seasons hanging around mid table, finishing between 7th and 11th. I found that the extra money from media (from playing big teams all the time) made up for the fact that I couldn't keep increasing my TP, and my club rating settled down but didn't drop too much because the squad was still improving.
After the settling in period you can start pushing to finish 1 place higher each season and now instead of challenging for mid-table we're challenging for Inter Cup spots. It's not easy, by any means, but it's possible.
That being said, you do need to be have the squad and finances in place before you go up- not to immediately challenge for the top, but enough not to struggle in the bottom half. In most leagues this should be reasonably easy to do if you're a decent manager. The Bundesliga and Brazil Serie A are probably the two exceptions to that.
The question is, are you happy to languish in mid-table for a while and stick to a very long term plan?

Normally I'd be fully behind promotion but in your position - you're close(ish) to 5501, and I'd anticipate a significant drop in points as you settle in a lower-mid table position next season (and lose a lot more games). I can see the benefits of delaying promotion if you think you can achieve that points target fairly quickly, and then you can make a good fist of the top league with your new staff.
Having said that, if you already have the 5501 staff then come on in, the water's lovely

That's the thing that has been holding me back. I'm about 150 short. But It's all a bit late now! The current is taking me up!

You'll both be fine whatever the weather, the most important thing is getting youth academy players with fixed attributes atleast +70 (loyalty doesn't matter)
Once you get these youngsters promoted, especially the +90 fixed attribute players you can decide to train them up or sell them on, or do a bit of both
I personally sold both of my first two 90+ players and reinvested the money I got wisely whilst always keeping my overall club value above 80million and got the 6501 staff before I entered the top flight
Getting the 5501 or 6501 and even 7501 staff is certainly possible in the top flight,, doing the safe slow methodical way or the faster way of selling some of your prized assets are both better than relegating yourself on purpose like some do
