What I say after an embarrassing result (especially after a string of embarrassing results) and what I actually think may not be the same thing Sometimes I have to put on a brave face and be magnanimous in defeat even whilst seething.

Brighton do have something about them, Potter does a good job with the resources he has but there's a limit to how far up the table any team can get without the right financial backing.

Brighton have spent a fair bit of money over the last few seasons anyway. Something like 200m in the last 5 seasons apparently. I imagine they'd get a decent chunk of that back if they sell White though.

Yeah that 202m puts them 9th on the net spend list over last 5 years but there's also the question of whether that's a lot of mid-range players or a few top class ones and also whether they've got the wage budget to hang onto the ones that show themselves to be the best.

Their highest priced individual player is £20m which ranks them 17th in the same 5 year period so it feels like it's a case of a larger number of players to build a squad and consolidate rather than the sort of spending that can push the team dramatically up the table.

Defence has been solid in recent times but they really need to splash out on some top clash attackers to help them move up the league but they're the players that cost the most and demand the most.

Spending less than £15m on players seems like the smart way of doing things. You can still sign quality players who can go on to do well and make a good profit once sold on whilst if they flop then you're not losing too much on them. There are good players out there for a decent price but it depends on how good your recruitment/scouting is.

At Southamption, we spent far too much on expensive flops who we could barely give away (Carrillo, Lemina, Hoedt, Boufal) which essentially wasted all the Van Dijk money. I'd like to think our recruitment is going to improve again and the last year has seemed better (Walker-Peters, Diallo, and Salisu all seem very promising). It would be nice if our youth players got to a similar level to those from the past.

Too early to predict as it depends on the transfer market.

Depends where Kane and Grealish end up. If they both go to City then might as well hand them the title now
