Whats in a NAME
Whats in a NAME

What do they mean where do they come from?????

All sorts origins some fascinating some prosaic!

While looking at the Transfer Market seeing who has bought who and for how much

An 85 rated goal keeper Ursmar Schaumer for 1M he must be old? he was

An 80 rated striker for 17M he must be young? 23 In-sung Gook

I signed a youth player largely because he was called Zebedee a nostalgic nod to the 60 s-70s children's program 'The Magic Roundabout' I know have 2 Zebedee's in my team
TWO ZEBEDEE's what are the chances who knows with what id imagine some random name generator and who cares?

Well it was something about "In-sung Gook" that struck "GOOK" being a racial slur for asian people this player is south korean!

GOOK is apparently an actual surname from Middle English goke gowke Old Scandinavian gaukr ?cuckoo?.

I use the Scots GOWK for a cuckoo or fool

I request if possible this name be retired, I would hope there is not players with N word or P word or any other words used as racial slurs in the game.

I appreciate any thoughts and views on this matter from all.

thank you

Ursmar Schaumer was one of my first superstar youth promotions, back before I could make use of him...shall I bring him home?

What fascinates me is this game throws up so many unusual surnames yet there seems to be a lot more players with the same surname than in say the Premier League. Although I probably pay more attention to player names on IAG than in real life

As someone who now lives in the Far East, out of interest I looked up more about Ozwon's comments.

I had never heard the word that he referred to before, but after some research it's right that it was/is used as a racial slur against Koreans and Vietnamese following wars there. And can also be used more generally against all Asians.
The name is ? and can be romanised in more than one way. One of which is 'gook' . It can also be romanised as 'kook' or 'kuk'.

I seem to remember names in the game are added to a database by mods/GMs or maybe the boss . I'm sure this was included innocently not realising the meaning. I also had never heard of it. I'd guess it's more common in USA than it is in the UK..

I suggest, if possible, whoever can change names in the database alters it to 'kook'..

I used to watch this too. I also remember going to see a magic roundabout play in a theatre around the late 90s.. it was hilarious...

I suggest we ignore the meaning and continue understanding a name is simply a name...

People read too much and insinuate possabilities, when in actual fact - it's just a name. Meanings and hidden agenda should be personal, not notable.. when in fact, the person isn't notable either.

Not totally sure I agree with this, there are plenty of examples of names being changed or falling out of fashion because of infamy or how they're perceived.

The benefit of keeping a name that is, let's face it, a racial slur is as close to zero as you can get, as is the impact on the game of removing it.

You have your opinion, fair enough.

Honestly don't get it. It's a name in a game. It isn't meant to insinuate or suggest anything racial or otherwise. No lesson to learn here.

Think someone has decided it is something else or could be construed as, and is therefore diving off the highest board to make it more noticeable than it is. The world is already like this, and bringing it in to a game is hilarious.
